STEM Classes for Students with Disabilities!

Learning about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) at a young age is more important than ever, both for the soft skills it helps develop (communication, creativity, teamwork, etc.) and the career opportunities it provides. That’s why we launched “STEM Classes for Students with Disabilities,” giving children in economically disadvantaged public schools the opportunity to develop science and math skills through inclusive arts integration. In addition to weekly visits to special education classrooms across Los Angeles Unified School District, we’re also hosting workshops for parents and teachers in order to create strong school-home connections. At our most recent one we learned about sequences through a music and movement game, and then used scientific inquiry to explore the concept of “diffusion” through a coffee filter art project. Check out the pictures!

The program is funded by California Arts Council, Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture, and Boston Scientific Foundation, whose mission is to improve health and STEM educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged populations.

How We Spent Our Summer Vacation

Our summer online workshop series “Diversifoil: Strategies for Arts Inclusion!” was a tremendous success, reaching a broad range of educators from across the country, including teaching artists, art specialists, and museum assistants. We had so much fun creating art out of foil and hearing the creative ways everyone planned to bring this work to their students. Our participants can now spread the EA approach to the 48,000 children that they interact with each year!

Hello & Goodbye

This fall we bid a bittersweet farewell to Heather Heslup, who served on our Board of Directors for five years and was crucial in the creation of our Strategic Plan, developing our fundraising strategy, planning and implementing our Summer Soiree, and ensuring our ongoing commitment to our mission and values. We’re incredibly proud that Heather has been voted onto the CA for the Arts and CA Arts Advocates Board of Directors, and wish her the best of luck in her new endeavors!

We’re excited introduce our newest Board Member Darryl King, an artist and educator who serves as the Assistant Director of the CalArts Community Arts Partnership. Darryl is a 2022 MFA graduate of CalArts, where he based his thesis on establishing the Freedom Art Squad, a youth development project for high school students that used art and imaginative play to reimagine school safety and advocate for alternatives to police on school campuses. He believes that all students and artists have the power to build collective capacity in their communities, interrogate oppressive systems like over-policing, and create shared solutions to harm that impacts the most vulnerable. We’re thankful to have Darryl on our team!
